Not quite ready to relinquish total control to a two-ton hunk of metal on four wheels? Cadillac’s new Super Cruise will help ease you into the autonomous driving future.Featured in the 2018 Cadillac CT6, the hands-free program allows motorists to safely complete menial tasks, like using the navigation system, adjusting the radio, or taking a phone call. The luxury automaker’s answer to Tesla Autopilot, Super Cruise is based on a network of cameras and radar sensors, paired with driver-attention tech and precision LiDAR map data “to ensure safe and confident vehicle operation.”“When we were developing Super Cruise we knew it was important to keep the driver engaged during operation,” Barry Walkup, chief engineer of Cadillac Super Cruise, said in a statement. “That’s why we’ve added a driver attention function, to insist on driver supervision.”A small camera built into the steering column focuses exclusively on the driver; it works with infrared lights to track head position and determine where the operator is looking when Super Cruise is in operation.CadillacSpend too much time daydreaming, staring at your phone, or engrossed in lively conversation with passengers, and the car automatically prompts you—via a series of escalating visual, tactile, and audible alerts—to return your attention to the road.In case you’re a heavy sleeper or unconscious, the CT6 goes into full driver-assistance mode to stop the car and contact OnStar’s first responders.Cadillac’s use of precision LiDAR map data, meanwhile, gives the General Motors division a step up over its competitors. While Tesla owners are free-wheeling it on meandering country roads, Super Cruise operates only where road conditions are deemed appropriate—divided, limited-access highways with defined on- and off-ramps.This approach, the company said, eliminates variables like intersections and other “less predictable potential hazards” on rural roads and city streets.“While it is technically possible for the technology to drive hands-free on other kinds of streets and roads,” Walkup admitted, “we feel strongly that this targeted approach is the best to build consumer and regulatory confidence and enthusiasm for advanced mobility.”Super Cruise will be offered as an option in the US and Canada, starting with this fall’s 2018 Cadillac CT6 prestige sedan.
