VIRUS TODAY: Lawmakers call for race data on vaccine access

first_imgDemocratic lawmakers are calling on federal health officials to address racial disparity in vaccine access nationwide in a letter sent to the acting Health and Human Services secretary, Norris Cochran IV. Data from some states has shown hard-hit nonwhite Americans who are eligible to get the vaccine are not receiving it in proportion to their share of the population. In the letter that they sent on Thursday, Rep. Ayanna Pressley and Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Edward Markey, all from Massachusetts, say the agency must work with states, municipalities and private labs to collect and publish demographic data of vaccine recipients.last_img read more

India’s opposition shuns Parliament, backs farmers’ demands

first_imgNEW DELHI (AP) — Major Indian opposition parties have boycotted the opening day of Parliament’s budget session in solidarity with protesting farmers engaged in a standoff over new agricultural laws the government refuses to repeal. The protests were marked by violence on Tuesday, Republic Day, when tens of thousands of farmers riding tractors and on foot stormed the 17th century Red Fort. Clashes left one protester dead and nearly 400 police officers injured. India’s ceremonial president listed the government’s budgetary priorities in Parliament and described the violence as “unfortunate.” The main opposition Congress party said 16 opposition parties boycotted the president’s address.last_img read more

China rights activist missing after being stopped at airport

first_imgBEIJING (AP) — Authorities have given no word on the status of Chinese legal rights activist Guo Feixiong after he was blocked from leaving the country last week to join his family in the United States. Guo’s sister Yang Maoping said Tuesday morning they had no word from Guo or information from police since he was reportedly detained at Shanghai’s Pudong airport while attempting to board a flight to the U.S. Guo had messaged friends that he would go on hunger strike unless allowed to leave the country to be with his wife who is undergoing treatment for cancer. As a lawyer, Guo represented government critics and had been imprisoned for more than 10 years under China’s loosely defined state security laws.last_img read more

Rights groups call for boycott of Beijing 2022 Winter Games

first_imgTOKYO (AP) — A coalition of 180 rights groups is calling for a boycott of next year’s Beijing Winter Olympics tied to reported human rights abuses in China. The games are to open on February 4, 2022. The coalition is made up of groups representing Tibetans, Uighurs, Inner Mongolians and others. The group has issued an open letter to governments calling for a boycott of the Olympics “to ensure they are not used to embolden the Chinese government’s appalling rights abuses and crackdowns on dissent.” Rights groups have previously asked the International Olympic Committee to move the games from China.last_img read more
