Special prayers for Mandela

first_imgPrayers and messages wishing former President Nelson Mandela a speedy recovery continue to flood in from around the world.(Image: Nelson Mandela Foundation) Churchgoers across the country joined thousands of people from all over the world wishing former South African President Nelson Mandela a quick recovery. Over the weekend churches around South Africa held vigils and said special prayers for the ailing Nobel Peace Prize laureate. “Let us light a candle and pray for the health of former president uTata Nelson Mandela,” said Pastor Joseph Kubheka of the Methodist church in Johannesburg’s Braamfontein suburb, at the morning service on Sunday. Many other churches in the country included similar prayers in their Sunday services. Over the past week, messages of support wishing Mandela a speedy recovery have poured in from all over the world. The elder statesman was admitted to Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg on Wednesday 26 January, suffering with an acute respiratory infection. He was discharged two days later to recuperate at his Houghton, Johannesburg, home, where he continues to receive specialist care.“Let us now unite in prayer and wish him a speedy recovery,” said African National Congress treasurer-general Mathews Phosa, who attended the prayer service organised by the ruling party and the Eastern Cape Council of Churches for Mandela at the Regent Hotel in East London on Sunday.A candle of hopeGauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane joined the congregation at Soweto’s famous Regina Mundi Catholic Church, praying for Mandela’s fast recuperation. As part of the Candle of Hope campaign, which encourages people to show their support for Mandela by lighting a candle of hope for his recovery, Mokonyane lit a candle bearing an image of the South African flag as prayers were said.At the Faith Mission Church of Christ in Vosloosrus, east of Johannesburg, the congregation sang songs and clapped in celebration of the anti-apartheid icon. “We want to wish uTata well, we hope he recovers soon,” said Ntate Jacob Motlana, one of the elders in the church.“There has been such a gloomy air surrounding our great hero’s hospitalisation, so by celebrating his life in our service today we are hoping to send some positive energy that will put uTata in good spirits. We hope he is not in pain and recovers soon.”Well-wishers congregated at the Da Vinci Hotel in Sandton, northern Johannesburg, on 29 January to light candles and pray for Mandela. The candle lighting ceremony was also aimed at sending prayers and positive energy to the veteran.“Light represents life and ignites warmth and good energy, so that is why we have lit candles,” said Gordan Dehl, who attended the ceremony. “We hope that as the candles burn they blow some positive energy that helps Mr Mandela heal soon.”World leaders, including US President Barack Obama, have also sent their best wishes to Mandela.“We truly appreciate the support and good wishes we received,” said South African President Jacob Zuma.Speaking at the African Union Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on Sunday, Zuma also wished the statesman a full recovery.“We wish him a long life and good health, as he continues to age with dignity and inspire all of us to strive to be better people each day.”last_img read more

Microsoft Connects Windows Live Essentials 2011 to the Cloud

first_img8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Tags:#cloud computing#Microsoft#news#NYT#web Microsoft just announced a major update to its Windows Live Essentials tools for the Windows desktop. The updated applications include the Windows Photo Gallery, Movie Maker, Mail and Live Writer. In addition, Microsoft also released a new synchronization client based on the company’s experience with Live Mesh, and will allow PC and Mac users to keep their documents, pictures and music in sync across multiple computers. While there are a lot of feature updates to these apps (and the Ribbon now features prominently in these apps), the big story here is that these apps are now more intimately connected to the cloud.Photo Gallery While bloggers will surely appreciate the new version of Windows Live Writer, Microsoft has also added a few nifty features to all the other Live Essentials apps. The new version of Photo Gallery, which now supports multitouch screens and Windows 7 libraries, also features built-in photo recognition. The real wow-factor, however, comes from a new feature called Photo Fuse, which allows you to combine the best parts of different pictures into one composite image. This is a great tool for making sure that everybody in a group photo is smiling, for example. You just select the best parts from multiple images (preferably all taken at the same height, distance and zoom range). Photo Gallery’s new retouch feature should also make it easier to fix problems in your photo. In addition to these features, the Photo Gallery app now also allows users to send their photos on Facebook and – more importantly – comments from your Facebook friends will be imported back to the desktop app.Sync Windows Live Sync helps users keep their folder in sync across multiple computers. This feature works in the background and automatically syncs data back and forth between different machines. Just like Live Mesh – which this tools is partly based on – Sync also allows users to easily open up a remote desktop connection to their PCs. The folder synching feature is available for Windows and OSX, though the remote desktop access is limited to Windows machines. To get started with Sync, just head over to http://devices.live.comMailWindows Live Mail now features a Gmail-like conversation view – and unlike in Hotmail, this feature will be turned on by default. Just like Hotmail, Live mail now features “quick views” that allow users to organize and filter their mail. Thanks to tighter integration with the calendar, Mail now feels more like Outlook.Mail has also inherited some features from Windows Live Writer. Users can now, for example, create small image galleries inside an email and perform some small image editing tasks in the app.Movie MakerMovie Maker also got a nice update and now allows users to easily share their videos on Facebook, Flickr, YouTube and Microsoft’s SkyDrive. In addition, Microsoft added a number of new themes, and you can now easily import photos from the Photo Gallery and create an animated slideshow with just a few clicks. The new movie even highlights captions. VerdictThe question, of course, is how these apps compare to Google’s and Apple’s offerings. Google’s Picasa and Apple’s iPhoto offer some of the same features as Microsoft’s Photo Gallery (face recognition, retouching, online galleries), but Microsoft, of course, has the advantage of offering a tool that is more closely integrated with the Microsoft ecosystem. Microsoft also makes it easy to upload images to multiple third-party photo services and gives users a more generous allotment of free space for sharing pictures than Google. (Apple charges for these features.) The ability to sync Facebook comments back and forth between the cloud and the desktop is also a welcome addition to Live Essentials. We haven’t been able to get our hands on the Windows Live Movie Maker, so we will have to withhold judgement of how well it compares to iPhoto. In the last version, the app got a major makeover and compared very well to Apple’s iMovie.Microsoft is clearly trying to create a better connection between its desktop and online tools. While there used to be a lot of confusion around Microsoft’s syncing tools, for example (at one point, it felt like the company offered 10 tools that all performed similar functions), Sync now feels like the glue that will hold all of these tools together. While geeks generally tend to overlook Microsoft’s offerings (besides maybe Live Writer), this new suite of tools is worth another look. Of Course Selling Is About Relationships

first_imgIf selling is not about relationships, why then does your existing client call you to bring you in to help them when they take a new role at a new company? Is trust not a part of commercial relationships? What underlies your ability to get access to your contacts that they universally deny other salespeople? Why do they give you time and deprive others? If relationships are not a factor, why do you lose some deals to the incumbent supplier, even though you have a better offering? Why is it so difficult to displace an existing supplier, and why do so many of their contacts defend them—even when they perform poorly? What accounts for a contact’s desire to protect their under-performing supplier? When you receive the call from your existing client to provide you the details of your competitor’s bid and to ask you to make the necessary adjustments to your offering, is this somehow evidence of the absence of a relationship? Is it an absence of a strong preference to work with you? When your existing client refers you to a peer in another division or another company, was that done without any thought about you and your relationship? Are they recommending you because they don’t care about you? Are they suggesting the person they refer will find you to be adequate or acceptable?Your client hands you a giant stack of your competitor’s sales collateral, their proposals, and the pricing. Why is it that they want you to have this competitive intelligence? Why wasn’t your collateral and proposal handed over with all but the one competitor’s content they prefer?Be Careful and ThinkYou have to be very careful when you read ideas that propose that certain attributes, skills, or approaches are mutually exclusive. The danger here as it pertains to relationships falls into two areas. First, in a world that is increasingly being pulled in two directions, super-transactional and super-relational, deciding to have a super-transactional approach when that is not your overarching business strategy is a dangerous game. If you need to be consultative, super-relational is a better choice.Second, you can fall into the trap of believing that being smart means you don’t have to have all the other attributes, skills, and character traits that would cause people to prefer to work with you than with your competitor. You also have to deal with the definition of words. If relationship means that I like you and you like me without also providing other value (economic, strategic, etc.), then what you are describing is a conflict-averse, order-taker, not commercial relationships, per se. By definition, the word “relationship” means “the way two things are connected. If relationship means that I know you, I like you, I trust you, and you create value for me beyond our enjoying each other’s company, then you might be getting closer to a modern commercial relationship.last_img read more

World champions India play West Indies in first of 5 ODIs

first_imgOff to a perfect start by winning the lone Twenty20 game of the tour, a second-string India will have to shift gears quickly and brace for an ODI battle against a depleted West Indies in a five-match series starting in Port of Spain, Trinidad, on Monday. This is India’s first ODI match since the World Cup triumph in Mumbai on April 2. India are without the services of Sachin Tendulkar, regular captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and pace spearhead Zaheer Khan, who have all been rested, in addition to Yuvraj Singh and the injured duo of Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir.Led by Suresh Raina, the Indians made a confident start to the tour by easing past the hosts by 16 runs in the lone Twenty20 match on Saturday.Raina marshalled the young side well and they hardly showed any nerves while outplaying the Caribbeans, who desperately missed the services of Chris Gayle. Also, the West Indies are without pacers Fidel Edwards, Jerome Taylor and Kemar Roach. But facing a depleted West Indies also means the added pressure of not just winning but winning big and Raina is well aware of it.”There’s always pressure and we have done well under pressure. It’s for us as players to execute the plans of the coach well. We have to play our natural game,” he said.During the Twenty20 win, the Indians were at a precarious 56 for four by the ninth over, but Subramaniam Badrinath and Rohit Sharma added 71 runs and that launch- pad helped the lower order to plunder 72 runs in the final five overs.advertisementIndia have an untested opening pair of Parthiv Patel and Shikhar Dhawan, who failed to click in T20 game, but the rest of the line- up looks solid.Led by Munaf Patel, the Indian pace bowling is not the strongest but the spinners – spearheaded by Harbhajan Singh and R Ashwin- would be expected to do well on a track on which the ball has been turning quite a bit.West Indies have a reasonable batting line- up on paper with Darren Bravo being the pick of the lot, but the team hasn’t put enough runs on the board in recent times.All- rounder Kieron Pollard, who wasn’t included in the Twenty20 side, is back in the team for the first two ODIs and that would bolster the side.Bowling, however, would be a big concern for skipper Darren Sammy. The skipper himself did well to pick up four wickets on Saturday, but the rest of the attack let him down by conceding runs late in the innings.TEAMSIndia: Suresh Raina (capt), R Ashwin, S Badrinath, Harbhajan Singh ( vice- capt), Virat Kohli, Praveen Kumar, Amit Mishra, Munaf Patel, Parthiv Patel (wk), Yusuf Pathan, Wriddhiman Saha ( wk), Ishant Sharma, Rohit Sharma, Vinay Kumar, Manoj Tiwary, Shikhar Dhawan.West Indies: Darren Sammy ( capt), Carlton Baugh ( wk), Lendl Simmons, Kirk Edwards, Darren Bravo, Marlon Samuels, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Dwayne Bravo, Kieron Pollard, Andre Russell, Anthony Martin, Devendra Bishoo, Ravi Rampaul.-With PTI inputslast_img read more
