India’s opposition shuns Parliament, backs farmers’ demands

first_imgNEW DELHI (AP) — Major Indian opposition parties have boycotted the opening day of Parliament’s budget session in solidarity with protesting farmers engaged in a standoff over new agricultural laws the government refuses to repeal. The protests were marked by violence on Tuesday, Republic Day, when tens of thousands of farmers riding tractors and on foot stormed the 17th century Red Fort. Clashes left one protester dead and nearly 400 police officers injured. India’s ceremonial president listed the government’s budgetary priorities in Parliament and described the violence as “unfortunate.” The main opposition Congress party said 16 opposition parties boycotted the president’s address.last_img read more

first_imgAlthough the modern-day version of the NBA’s Slam Dunk Contest doesn’t attract as many big names as other All-Star events, it remains a hit due to its storied history and memorable moments it’s brought since debuting in 1984.The event has given rise to some of the NBA’s smallest players, including in 1986, when 5-7 Spud Webb defeated his Hawks teammate and defending champion Dominique Wilkins. Webb remains the shortest player to win the win the event, but 5-9 Nate Robinson has the most contest titles (three) from his dominant run last decade. Farren wore the no.18 jersey during his career at Derry City.Farren is one of the greatest strikers the LOI has produced – and is Derry City’s all-time record goal scorer.Mark’s biggest battle unfortunately has been fought off the field after he was diagnosed with having a brain tumour in 2008.An operation to remove a brain tumour was unsuccessful – that prompted a massive fundraising drive to help raise finance to enable Mark to undergo revolutionary treatment in Mexico.
