Genealogy Librarian Karen Bullard took the opportunity to express appreciation to the  Pike County Historical Genealogical & Preservation Society for the generous donation. Skip “The ScanPro 3000 will provide a top of the line scanner for anyone interested in genealogy to search for vital records, many of which are not online. The scanner can also be used to look up county history,” Bullard said. The library’s Genealogical Research Center has 1,000 rolls of microfilm that hold records, including births, deaths, marriages, wills, deeds, state records, local newspaper articles and newspaper articles from adjoining counties that share a history with Pike County.“The genealogical center has the documents that are needed for those who are doing genealogical research,” Bullard said. “Between 80 and 100 rolls of microfilm are used each month. “What the ScanPro 3000 means for those who are doing research is that the information can be searched, page by page, and printed, emailed to personal accounts or saved to a USP flash drive. Having that information quickly available in those formats is important because many of those who come to the Troy Public Library to do genealogical research come from long distances and are only here for a day or two.” Latest Stories Published 3:00 am Friday, February 17, 2017 Print Article Messenger photos/Jaine TreadwellMembers of the Pike County Historical Genealogical & Preservation Society visited the Karen C. Bullard Genealogy Center, which has the largest collection of genealogy information in the Southeast.“We’ve had visitors from every state except three,” Bullard said. “They are always impressed with the volume of information that we have and with the knowledge of our staff about the information that we have and its ability to retrieve it so quickly.”Bullard said the new scanner will also make it possible for the staff to handle out-of-town requests. The information can be pulled up and emailed directly to them.Bullard believes there will be continuing interest in genealogical research among people of all ages.“As we get older, we just want to know more about our family histories, she said. “When parents come in looking for information to fill out family trees for their babies, once they get started, they want to know more.”The same is true of many students who are required to trace their ancestry back a specified time.“It’s just natural to want to know more about your family history,” Bullard said. “We thank the Pike County Historical Genealogical & Preservation Society for the generous gift of the scanner that will make it easier and quicker to get information in the hands of those who are interested in historical research and preservation.” Sponsored Content Book Nook to reopen Around the WebIf You Have Ringing Ears Do This Immediately (Ends Tinnitus)Healthier LivingMd: Do This Immediately if You Have Diabetes (Watch)Blood Sugar BlasterHave an Enlarged Prostate? Retired NYPD chief sues department over alleged ‘glass ceiling’ for female officers

first_imgtillsonburg/iStockBy AARON KATERSKY and IVAN PEREIRA, ABC News(NEW YORK) — A “glass ceiling” keeps women from climbing to the highest ranks of the nation’s largest police force, a retired New York Police Department chief alleged Monday in a new lawsuit.Lori Pollock, the department’s first female chief of Crime Control Strategies, contends she was forced into retirement last week after 33 years of service due to “intolerable, difficult and unpleasant” working conditions that prevent women from advancing to “the most prestigious executive positions within the NYPD.” Pollock, one of five women to achieve the rank of three-star chief in the department’s 175-year history, contends that NYPD Police Commissioner Dermot Shea mocked her and made her feel unwelcome during internal meetings.“Shea deliberately implemented, condoned, sanctioned and ratified a glass ceiling policy and practice within the NYPD,” the suit says.During a November 2019 meeting when Pollock gave a presentation to Shea, who had recently been promoted to commissioner, the suit claims he was distracted by his phone. Pollock told the commissioner at the meeting that she had interest in the chief of detectives position, which Shea had vacated when he got his promotion. On Dec. 9, the department unveiled a new Bureau of Community Partnerships that was going to be led by Chauncey Parker, a civilian, with Pollock serving as a subordinate, the suit said. The suit contends that Pollock was never included in any of the discussions about the new bureau or her role.“This is a starkly different career trajectory for Pollock as compared to her male predecessors,” the suit says.Later that day, Shea held a meeting to install the new members of the unit and over 30 top NYPD executives attended, according to the suit. In the past Pollock would sit three seats removed from the commissioner, but due to her reassignment she was placed at the other end of the table, the suit said.“During the meeting, and in front of the entire executive staff, Shea shouted to Pollock and stated: ‘Hey Lori how do you like it at the other end of the table?’” the suit said.Pollock said she tried to meet with Shea to talk about her reassignment but he could not find time, and in March, she requested to resign from the force, the suit said. The commissioner said he wouldn’t accept her resignation and conceded, “Structurally her transfer was wrong,” according to the suit.Over the next couple of months, Shea promoted several men to high-ranking positions without affording women the opportunity to interview for them, the suit contends. Pollock resigned on Aug. 6, “finding she had no alternative because it was more than clear to her that she could not advance her career,” the suit said.A spokeswoman for the NYPD told ABC News that the department will review the suit when it is served.“The contributions of women, both in leadership roles and in their representation in the uniformed and civilian ranks, across the Police Department, cannot be overestimated,” the spokeswoman said in a statement. The suit contends Shea violated New York’s laws against gender discrimination and seeks compensatory damages that will be determined at a future date.Copyright © 2020, ABC Audio. Vietnam is the ‘favorite’ story for fund managers seeking growth

first_imgVietnamese stocks are some of the world’s most battered this year, yet market watchers are backing a turnaround. They’re pointing to valuations that haven’t been this cheap since 2017 and an economy that’s been growing 5 percent or more each year for two decades. The nation’s benchmark gauge has almost completely erased its 2019 returns and now trades at about 12 times estimated earnings over the next year.Concerns about trade and supply-chain disruptions due to the coronavirus have already wiped off more than 6 percent from the VN Index this year. With China delaying the reopening of land borders and travel restrictions, Vietnam expects industries related to tourism, agriculture, textiles and machinery to be hit hard. But analysts so far have remained positive, projecting that the nation’s companies will manage to post record earnings. “Vietnam is still one of my favorite countries in terms of growth prospects, valuations and dividend yield,” said Federico Parenti, a fund manager at Sempione Sim SpA in Milan. “I will surely add more shares once it will be more clear how the situation will evolve.”Many acknowledge earnings for the quarter ending in March will take a hit as visas for Chinese tourists — which account for about a third of the total arrivals — got halted, while meetings and festivals were canceled to avoid the spread of the virus.Even though foreigners have pulled US$5.3 million from Vietnamese equity funds this year, that’s much less than the outflows from peers such as Thailand, Indonesia or the Philippines. And while the Vietnamese equity index is still 25 percent below its 2018 peak, it’s proved to be resilient in the long run. Since 2012, it has rallied every year except one.The recent sell-off is presenting “interesting value opportunities” in transport, energy and consumption, said Andrew Brudenell, the manager of a frontier-markets fund for Ashmore Group Plc. Ruchir Desai, a fund manager at Asia Frontier Capital Ltd., also likes travel-related stocks.Vietnam remains one of the fastest growing economies in Asia, with an expansion rate of 7 percent for 2019, according to official data. While the government said it may slow to under 6 percent in 2020, that still places Vietnam above most countries. Investors also see the market as one of the biggest beneficiaries of a shift in supply chains away from China.Vietnam Asset Management expects the ratification earlier this month of a free-trade agreement with the European Union to also have a “significantly positive” impact on the nation’s economy. Ngo The Trieu, chief investment officer of Eastspring Investments in Vietnam, says the revision of the country’s securities law and launch of new indexes will further grow the nation’s equity market.“Sectors that directly capture the growth drivers of the domestic economy” will generate value for long-term investors, he said.Topics :last_img read more

Stay.com Reboots Travel

first_imgA Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Tags:#user-generated content#web curt hopkins Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Marketcenter_img A couple of weeks ago, we wrote about social travel site Stay.com‘s expansion. After months of retooling, the user-built travel guide site has relaunched and we have had a chance to play the virtual flâneur. Among other changes, Stay.com has struck deals with TripAdvisor, TopTable and OpenTable. They are planning on adding in more such information as they go forward. Users of Stay.com pull elements such as hotels, restaurants, bars, shopping, museums and gardens together with a click, to create a guide crafted to their needs, tastes and destinations. It can be consulted on computer or smart phone, or printed out as a pocket-sized .pdf. Users can broadcast their itinerary or parts of it to friends via Facebook and Twitter. Each guide that gets created adds to the library of itineraries available to users. Stay.com’s goal, according to its publicist and materials, was to make a very intuitive interface for travelers and they seem to have done that. The cities, lodging, bars and so on, are arranged hierarchically from most likely to be needed to possibly useful. The ability to both read it online and to print it out serves those who either wish to untether or who find electronics less useful on their trick (not enough power or too many pickpockets, for instance). For some types of sites, the more dazzling they are, the more enjoyable. This is not necessarily the case with travel. You’re already traveling, after all. Oh, the sights you’ll see – they’re more important than the sites. In that respect, the pleasant but clean design, in service of the travel, is appealing. Additional features Stay.com plans to roll out include user-added venues and places, third-party sharing widgets, full mobile integration and geolocation and video guides. CWG scam: CBI registers fresh case, conducts raids in Delhi, Mumbai

first_imgTightening the noose on the perpetrators of Commonwealth Games scam, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday conducted raids at a number of locations in Delhi and Mumbai. CBI teams carried out searches at various locations in the two cities early in the morning and caught the CWG-dealing offices unaware. The special investigation team (SIT) of CBI also registered a fresh case in connection with the construction of stadiums for the mega-event, held in October 2010. The FIR was in relation with the construction of Sirifort Sports Complex in the national capital. Suresh Kalmadi, the former chief of CWG organising committee (OC), has been in jail over his alleged role in the bungling during and ahead of the event. Many other former officials have also been arrested in connection with the CWG scam cases.last_img read more
